When the Ford Mustang transitioned into the electric SUV world with the Mach-E, the next logical step would be to create a rally racer.
The Mustang Mach-E takes things to the next level with a rally racing EV featuring the equipment and the look desired on a dirt-covered rally track. This new Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally includes a set of circular fog lights, knobbier tires, and a large rear spoiler. This new performance, racing Mach-E, will be available to interested parties this fall in the United States and Europe. If you never thought you’d see the day a Mustang hit the rally circuit, think again.
The Mach-E Rally isn’t just a concept
Sometimes automakers bring concept vehicles to high-end events, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which is where the new Rally version of the Mach-E appeared. This new electric SUV will head into production soon and become a rally-ready racing SUV. To date, we don’t have specific details about the off-road features, power, and price, but the look is impressive, and the promise of production makes it enticing. Ford attempted to hide some of the bodywork under camouflage, but it didn’t work, and we can see what’s going on under the black-and-white skin of this Mustang Mach-E.
Excellent performance qualities shown on an EV
The Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally is still an electric SUV, bringing some items and elements typically reserved for gas-powered vehicles. This new EV SUV includes a restyled front end with circular fog lights mounted in the panel that looks like a grille. You’ll also see a red recovery hook on the front bumper for those times drivers overcompensate and need rescuing on the track. The wheels feature body cladding around the arches while these arches are filled with flat-faced rims wearing knobbier tires.
The rear end, which typically arches smoothly down to the hatch, now features a prominent rear spoiler to give this Mach-E the racing look that could be taken seriously when it’s out on the track. This rear spoiler reminds us of the impressive, powerful, and fun Ford Focus RS, which was the final hot hatch created by Ford.
It seems the only thing for sure that we can’t figure out is whether or not this Mach-E has more ground clearance than the traditional model. A slight change in ground clearance could benefit this electric SUV, but most rally racing machines are built low to the ground.
Will this be the most powerful Mach-E
The most powerful Mach-Es in production are the GT and GT Performance. These two Mach-Es feature dual-motor layouts that make 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque. This is a great place for the new Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally to start. This new Rally trim could easily be a few steps higher with more power and impressive features to make it fun to drive. Will the Rally model be offered to the public or reserved for rally racing teams? We’ll soon find out.
With top-level power, the GT Performance hits 60 mph in only 3.5 seconds, making it a quick, decisive, and impressive performance SUV. Other models feature less power, including a version that has 266 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, and another with 346 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. The wheels for most Mustang Mach-Es range from 18 to 20 inches in size, offering the desired feeling during any drive.
Can the Rally version offer a good driving range?
One of the greatest challenges of creating a rally-inspired electric SUV is to add enough driving range for these dirt-track races. The Mustang Mach-E includes a driving range between 266 and 312 miles depending on the configuration. Typically, the higher the power output, the lower the battery range for any electric vehicle.
An exciting display at Goodwood
The Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally will head up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with Ott Tanak behind the wheel. Tanak is the former World Rally champion who currently drives the M-Sport Ford Puma Hybrid Rally1 car. This should be a pretty impressive display of power and speed by this Ford electric SUV.
Can the Mustang Mach-E change the world of rally racing for good? Its easy enough to see that the future of all racing hinges on electric vehicles racing on the track, which includes the dirt tracks of rally racing. The Mach-E Rally is only the first electric SUV to hit the circuit, with production beginning soon. As we learn more, we’ll share performance and pricing figures with you.
