The Toyota Tacoma hits a new generation for 2024. Along with several new features and some amazing tech, this new Taco truck brings some new trims.
As we expected, this new Toyota midsize pickup truck brings hybrid powertrains and smaller engines to the mix but also offers much more power than before. We see new trims added, including the Trailhunter model and a rebirth of the PreRunner model. This Tacoma has a brand new interior that’s undergone a complete makeover, adding more style and impressive appearance items.
Here are some of the cool new features offered in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma.
1. A brand new platform under the Tacoma
The newest Toyota midsize pickup truck rides in the TNGA-F platform, which has become the global truck platform for the brand. This new Tacoma brings 9.5 inches of ground clearance, which ensures improved off-road capabilities on the trails. The wheelbase is longer, but the overall truck is the same length as the older models. You’ll also find more head and legroom in the cabin, which brings a better seating position compared to the outgoing version.
2. Toyota brings back the extended cab
Most trucks are leaning heavily toward crew cab builds with nothing else offered. The new Toyota Tacoma features a bed that is 7% larger than the previous generation, giving you plenty of cargo space for your drive. If you want more capacity in the cab, the XtraCab option is offered in the SR and SR5 models. This cab layout is standard on the TRD PreRunner model. What is the XtraCab? This is a two-door cab with a six-foot bed and a rear storage area in the cabin. There’s only seating for two, but it makes for a useful midsize truck.
3. Hybridization makes it to the Tacoma
The first hybrid Tacoma comes to us for the 2024 model year. This model brings a 2.4-liter engine plus a hybrid system with a 48-horsepower electric motor. This package is called the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain, and it delivers 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. These power numbers are nearly double what the previous V6 engine offered. This powertrain is offered as an option for the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited trims while a standard item in the TRD Pro and Trailhunter models.
4. Even the base engine is much better in this Toyota truck
The base powertrain for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma brings us a new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that brings more power than the outgoing models. If you stick with the base SR trim, you’ll find 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. As you move up to higher trims, this engine is tuned to deliver 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. These figures allow the entire Tacoma lineup to utilize only 4-cylinder engines.
5. Toyota didn’t forget to keep the manual
While most vehicles have transitioned to a single transmission or a couple of automatics, the new Tacoma still offers an impressive 6-speed manual transmission. This version offers automatic rev-matching and anti-stall technology to make it easier for novices to drive. The other transmission for the Tacoma is an 8-speed electronically controlled automatic. The only drawback to the manual is a power limit of only 270 horsepower for Tacoma’s with this transmission.
6. A new overlanding Trailhunter trim
The Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter takes off-roading to a different place than most midsize trucks. While the Ford Ranger Raptor, GMC Canyon AT4X, and Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 are all made for high-speed off-road adventures, the new Tacoma Trailhunter is ideal for overlanding expeditions. This trim brings some amazing features to ensure owners are comfortable in the wilderness for several days at a time. Some features included in this truck are the OME position-sensitive 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks, 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires, and impressive recovery points. The Trailhunter stands two inches higher than the rest of the Tacoma lineup.
7. The TRD Pro receives some much-needed upgrades
The three trucks mentioned above have quickly surpassed the TRD Pro Tacoma for off-road capability. This pressured Toyota into upgrading this midsize truck with new features, including the new i-Force Max powertrain, an improved suspension, a disconnecting front anti-roll bar, a 3.0-inch wider track than standard models, and larger electronic screens in the cabin. The seats of the TRD Pro include cylinders to stabilize and support the driver and front passenger while in the wilderness.
