Nothing about a business is more recognizable than its logo – even someone who doesn’t eat at McDonald’s can recognize the big yellow “M” outside the restaurant’s locations. What Happened to the Buick Logo?
As of March 16, 2022, a trademark filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows that Buick’s tri-shield logo is changing. The filing for Buick’s new design will be for motor vehicles, electronic keyfobs for automobiles, and merchandise ranging from keychains and mugs to umbrellas and clothing. Buick dealers could see all new Buick-related products on their shelves soon!
The design in the trademark changes the current diagonally staggered tri-shield in a roundel logo to a trio of larger shields standing side-by-side. This will be the most drastic change to the design of the Buick logo in over 30 years. This is a more simple, but striking logo that still keeps to the use of shields that Buick has had since its creation, ensuring even this new logo is still recognizable when seen at a Buick dealer.
While Buick has said they have no announcements to make related to a logo change currently, there’s no denying that a trademark filing related to their easily recognizable logo indicates a change is coming.
Why Change Now? What a New Logo Could Mean for Buick Dealers
Some have speculated that this logo change is because of the shift to electric car manufacturing. A change in the vehicles being offered may spur General Motors to rebrand Buick to match the new era of cars. A rebranding is best started with a new logo, so the trademark may signal this.
On the other hand, the new logo could be a regular update – Buick has often changed its design. The current logo being used by Buick was only made in 2015, after all. Unfortunately, without hearing an announcement from Buick or General Motors, there’s no way to know for sure at this time.
A change in the logo shouldn’t be an issue for Buick dealers because the only thing of note to a dealer would be that newer cars will have the new logo. This could make it easier to distinguish vehicles based on the year they were made because automobiles manufactured after 2022 will use the new logo.
