A recent report by Consumer Reports revealed that Ford Super Duty trucks are some of the most satisfying trucks out there today. Of course, a Super Duty doesn’t point to a single vehicle. Instead, there are a couple of options that fall under this nameplate.

Here’s what you need to know about the difference between the Ford F-250 and Ford F-350.

Super Duty Defined

Instead of sticking with the phrase “heavy-duty” used by other auto manufacturers, Ford decided to call its lineup of commercial trucks “Super Duty.” These trucks are more than just heavy-duty, they are supped up in every way imaginable, so they deserve a title that fully describes their capabilities.

Super Duty trucks are meant for larger tasks than your normal half-ton truck can handle. That means you get massive payload and towing capabilities. What makes these trucks able to take on the biggest job is that they are built with a special body-chassis architecture that holds everything together in a stronger manner. The result is a fully able truck that never backs down from a challenge.

F-250 or F-350: You Decide

There are a lot of similarities between the F-250 and F-350. In many ways, it’s hard to tell these Ford Super Duty trucks apart. For example, both trucks come with the same engine options.

• 6.2-liter V8 (385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque)
• 6.7-liter V8 turbodiesel (440 hp and 925 lb-ft of torque)

One significant difference between these two options involves the transmission. Both come with a TorqShift Heavy-Duty six-speed automatic transmission for the turbodiesel engine. The F-250, however, has a fresh TorqShift G transmission for the gas engine. The F-350 hasn’t gotten this update just yet. This transmission performs the same as the old one but is a little more efficient.

Because both the F-250 and F-350 have similar body construction and engine options, you’ll get similar towing abilities on each. The standard setup gives you the ability to pull up to 21,000 pounds. If you go with the fifth wheel setup, that number goes up to 27,500 pounds. The available gooseneck might as well turn your Ford Super Duty into a semi-truck with its 32,000 pounds of towing capability.

The price between these two trucks is also pretty similar. The Ford F-250 starts at $32,500 and goes up to $62,000 for the highest trim level. The F-350, on the other hand, starts at $32,700 and goes up to $62,000.

What’s the Difference Then?

With so many similarities, you might be wondering why there are two different models at all. If both tracks come with the same engine options, towing capability, and similar price?

The biggest difference that impacts most drivers is fuel efficiency. Depending on which trim you choose, you might see up to a 300-pound difference. Throw in the F-250’s more efficient transmission, and this option will be a better choice for those tackling longer drivers. The F-350 is a great option for those who don’t need to rack up many miles and don’t mind a heavier truck. Otherwise, the F-250 is a better choice for the highway warrior.
