The S-Class from Mercedes-Benz represents the height of the luxury coupe class from this long respected automaker. This car is sleek in design give us a look and feel of a variety of character lines that sweep back gracefully to give us the look we want; a strong luxury coupe that shows off the sportiness you want.
While the style and the equipment certainly can’t be beat and the drive is exceptional, the only area anyone could every question on the S-Class is the fuel consumption and the power. For everyday driving are you really going to make use of the massive S550 and all it has to offer from the engine compartment? With over 400 ponies trying to get out from under the hood you may spend more time consuming fuel than using it for the purpose of whipping the car around a track or finding the right canyon ridge to test this car and your skills.
For those of us who are aware of the fact most of our driving is commuter based and would rather have a car that will deliver a better fuel number Mercedes-Benz has created the S-Class in the S400 4Matic Coupe. This coupe is powered by a 3.0-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine that is the same one found under the hood of the SL450 and the C450 AMG. This engine does pack a pretty nice punch at 362 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, although it is 88 horsepower less than the S550. With this engine under the hood the car will reach sixty mph in less than 5.6 seconds, plenty fast for the drive. The important statistic is the fact this car can give you 28 mpg as an average which is 3 mpg more than the S550, which will make a huge difference over time.
Currently this car is slated to only be offered in Europe, thus representing yet another vehicle that we don’t get to enjoy in the US. Unsure of the reasoning behind this; it could be the market needs to be tested, it could be we don’t have a market for this car in the US or it could be a cost saving measure, but this car certainly offers some intrigue and shows that it would be much less expensive than the V8 counterpart, making it a worthy player on any high-end luxury market.
Knowing this car won’t make its way to the US the question is “do we really want it here?” We are a country that loves our horsepower and if you are willing to spend the money to get a high end sports luxury coupe you don’t want to be let down when you take it out for a joy ride in the country. On the other hand, with a V6 engine you could have a great ride that doesn’t make you gasp at how quickly the premium fuel is consumed. Certainly we could be on either side of this fence, and may be in the future we will see this car make it way here, for now we can simply admire it from afar.
