One of the most fun parts of looking at a special edition of any car is to learn what changes are being made in order to allow a car to be offered in the limited quantity expected and create a buzz about the car. When that special edition comes from a brand such as Ferrari the attention given is much more than many others would be and certainly the changes that Ferrari makes on a car can be much more aggressive than some others that might just add rebadging and color differences for their special edition vehicles.
The current special model being offered by Ferrari, or at least that will be unleashed on us is the Ferrari F12tdf. This car carries the name to pay homage to the Tour de France versions of Ferraris that were built for many years. One of the major differences we see right away is this car offers a massive amount of power over the L1 models that previously carried the name on the road. The power shows up at 770 horsepower and 521 lb.-ft. of torque from the massive 6.2-liter V12 engine. The transmission has been tooled to offer shorter gearing which allows the car to accelerate faster than the base F12.
Because this car is quicker we have to share the numbers just to see your jaw drop. The run to sixty mph will only take 2.9 seconds and this car can reach 125 mph in less than eight seconds with a top speed of 211 mph. If those numbers don’t get you excited, you are reading the wrong article. You can certainly take this beauty out on the road and experience the awesome handling and power, but you will want to log some track time and make the run around a loop to be one of the fastest cars at the track.
To handle all this power and to even give this car an even better chance of being the leader on the track the body and suspension have been tweaked to match the power of the engine. This car has what Ferrari is calling a “virtual short wheelbase” which lets us know it has a smart rear wheel steering to make it more agile than other cars you will see. The body benefits from a massive amount of aerodynamics with a big diffuser and bigger wings that than the base car which gives it nearly double the downforce. The weight loss overall is nearly 240 pounds to make it even easier to get to high speeds.
Of course, like I mentioned this will be a special edition and be limited to only 799 models. This will give us a car that certainly celebrates the Tour de France Ferraris of the past and gives us an F12 that is even better and more agile than the base F12. Ferrari has always performed perfectly and when called upon to create these special edition cars they offer the height of their creativity and engineering for us to admire.
