Ram is Finally Entering the Midsize Truck Market Again

The Dodge Dakota was the last midsize pickup truck that FCA offered us and it was built before Ram was its own brand.

This truck went out of production in 2011 and the FCA team hasn’t been in the midsize truck market since this time. With the new Jeep Wrangler pickup truck on the horizon, it appears that a midsize Ram variant will also be offered and be brought to the market as early as 2020. This may seem late for Ram to be getting back in the midsize truck market, but it’s certainly an area they need to begin to compete in again.

What Will the New Ram Be?

The new Ram midsize pickup truck and the Jeep Wrangler pickup will both be body on frame models and will be built alongside each other at the Toledo, OH plant. The Jeep model is slated to arrive in either 2019 or 2020, with the Ram being added a year later. The new plans to add a midsize Ram to the mix were disclosed during the product presentation on June 1stto give us an idea that Ram is ready to be added to the midsize market.

We Don’t Know Much Yet

Even though we know the new Ram midsize pickup will be built alongside the Jeep Wrangler pickup, we don’t know much about what this new truck will be just yet. The Jeep model will likely be offered with both a 3.6-liter V6 engine and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is currently found in the Jeep Wrangler models on the market. These engines are mated to either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual for the drive and the Wrangler does have 4WD for the off-road capability needed for the drive.

If these powertrains are what we’ll see in the new Ram midsize truck they are certainly a far cry from what we’ve seen from the Dodge Dakota of the past. That truck gave us the ability to have an engine that was a full V8 with a great deal of power and it was one of the most powerful and capable midsize trucks on the market. Of course, a new Ram midsize could make use of larger engines under the hood, but we truly have no idea if that will be the case or if it will be an offshoot of the Jeep truck.

A Lot Going on for Ram

Not only is there a plan for a new midsize truck, but there’s also a plan to create a new Heavy Duty lineup in 2022 to give us more of the performance and qualities we want with a lot of added power. This is also the time when a new Ram Rebel TRX and new ProMaster City van will both be introduced as well. Ram is making changes and it appears those changes are going to positively affect our market and make it possible for us to have a fantastic drive and plenty of power for the future.
