Leave it to BMW with all their many series of vehicles to create one that doesn’t fit anywhere. We have SUVs, but the X4 is not that, we have CUVs and it certainly isn’t that either. We even have SAVs with takes the utility out of the equation, but BMW is adamant the X4 is something else entirely. At BMW the X4 is called a Sport Activity Couple or SAC and it makes perfect sense. While the size of this vehicle is only slightly larger than a hatchback the style does invoke the feeling that it may just be a coupe that’s on a platform.
Now that we’ve identified what category to put it in, what is the BMW X4? This is a vehicle that is fun to drive and offers you the style that will get you excited with performance and power. While doing this you still get to have the space you need for up to five to fit in the vehicle with a little bit of gear, making this a vehicle that offers some practicality to go along with its fun and carefree nature.
For 2017 we see the X4 replacing the top trim level with the M40i to offer a more powerful engine and a sportier suspension setup. Across the lineup the X4 has an updated iDrive infotainment system, wireless charging and in vehicle Wi-Fi for you to enjoy. This gives you a vehicle that’s certainly more in tune with the connectivity you need on the market today, especially with the offering of the Wi-Fi hotspot for you to be connected to the world from your vehicle. Much smaller than it’s SUV big brother, X3, there’s still plenty of space for you to stretch out in.
When you get behind the wheel of a BMW what do you expect? As the leader in driving dynamics you want to enjoy a vehicle that you can push to the limits in a curve and know you will come out on the other side with a huge smile on your face. The X4 comes alive with two engines under the hood to give you the power you want to enjoy in this amazing vehicle. The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that offers up 240 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque while being mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission to bring in 20 city/28 hwy mpg. The higher engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that produces 355 horsepower and 343 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine uses the same transmission and gives you 19 city/26 hwy mpg. Both powertrains are set up with the xDrive system to allow you to enjoy the fun of AWD and both need premium fuel, which should be expected on a BMW vehicle.
Because this is a niche vehicle there are only two trims to enjoy on the X4. The base model comes standard with power front seats, a moonroof, automatic climate controls, a power tailgate, a universal garage door opener, rear parking assistance, a nine-speaker audio system with HD radio and Bluetooth connectivity. For 2017 all BMW models offer 3 years/36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance and 4 years of roadside assistance regardless of the miles driven.
The options for the X4 can be enjoyed and take this vehicle to a higher level of comfort and functionality. These features include leather upholstery, dynamic damper control, keyless entry, sport seats with lumbar support, a premium Harman/Kardon audio system, a Driver Assist Plus package that brings in blind spot monitoring, a surround view camera, lane departure warnings, and radar based cruise control. There is also a cold weather package that adds heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel and headlight washers while the technology package gives you a navigation system, a head up display and the BMW Apps remote services line.
The BMW X4 may be the right vehicle for you. As a luxury and active vehicle that you can drive like a sports coupe but have the added space of a smaller SUV this is a vehicle that fits many needs and allows you tons of driving options if you are so bold as to make this your vehicle of choice.
