Every year Cars.com puts out a report on which cars are the most “American” made vehicles in the US. Previously, the Ford-F150 held the title of Most American Vehicle, but this year there is an upset. The Toyota Camry claimed title to that name this year. The website puts out an annual American-Made index, which considers the percentage of domestic parts in a vehicle, final assembly place, and overall sales.
The list of eligible vehicles for the American-Made index seems to shrink each year with the globalization of vehicle manufacturing. Toyota took the top two spots in the American-Made Index. Both the Camry and Sienna ranked numbers one and two, marking Toyota’s return to the list for the first time in three years, and marking the fifth time that Camry has been named number one.
Cars with domestic parts content under 75 percent are disqualified from the list, as well as models built outside the US and models that will soon be discontinued without a US built successor. The Toyota Camry has been ranked Toyota’s best selling car in America for 13 consecutive years. It is built in Georgetown, KY out of the Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK).
Other cars built at the TMMK plant include the Toyota Camry Hybrid, Avalon and Avalon Hybrid. Sienna is built out of Princeton, IN at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, Inc (TMMI) and is assembled by a team of 5,000 workers. Most of the design, research, and engineering for the Camry and Sienna took pace at Calty Design Research, Inc located in Newport Beach, CA and Toyota Technical Center located in Ann Arbor, MI.
Toyota believes that the results of this list is a testament to their continued investment and growth in the United States. They have strengthened their commitments to American manufacturing to better meet the needs of their customers for decades to come.
